Unconditional Acceptance

Accept a person's worth while addressing behavior and keeping boundaries.

9. Separate my partner's worth as a person from a behavior I want to address?

For example: Your partner forgot an agreed chore. You address the missed chore without saying, “You are a worthless partner.”

10. Remain kind when my partner is disappointed, anxious, mistaken, or not at their best?

For example: Your partner is nervous before an interview. You respond with warmth rather than acting affectionate only when they seem confident.

11. Allow a painful feeling to be expressed without immediately correcting or dismissing it?

For example: Your partner says they feel lonely. Before explaining why they should not feel that way, you ask what loneliness has been like for them.

12. Say what I need plainly rather than expecting my partner to prove love by guessing it?

For example: You need quiet after work. You say, “I need half an hour to decompress,” instead of testing whether they will guess.

13. Remember that accepting someone does not oblige me to accept mistreatment or abandon my boundaries?

For example: Your partner repeatedly insults you. You can recognize their worth as a person and still end the conversation or seek safety.

14. Recognize my partner's effort without treating effort as a guarantee that they will change on my timetable?

For example: Your partner is trying to manage money more carefully but makes a mistake. You notice the effort without demanding instant perfection.

15. Give myself the same basic human acceptance I hope to extend to my partner?

For example: You miss an appointment. You acknowledge the mistake without deciding that you are a bad or unlovable person.
