Judgment

Check assumptions and speak about specific behavior instead of judging the person.

16. Check what I actually know before deciding what my partner “really meant”?

For example: Your partner sounds short on the phone. You ask if something is wrong before deciding they meant to hurt you.

17. Describe a specific behavior instead of calling my partner selfish, broken, or always wrong?

For example: You say, “I felt hurt when our plans changed without a conversation,” rather than, “You are selfish.”

19. Remain curious about an explanation that differs from my first interpretation?

For example: Your partner declines dinner because they are tired. Alongside “They do not want me,” you consider “They may need rest.”

21. Admit when I have made an unfair inference and revise it out loud?

For example: You assumed your partner ignored a request, then learn they never saw the message. You say, “I made an assumption; I was wrong.”
